Christian Education

Sunday School  Courtney Komlosi, Superintendent

Woodhaven has Sunday School for all ages each Sunday throughout the year, summer included.

Infants and Toddlers

Nursery (birth-2 years) Becky Manale & Stephanie Garcia

The youngest Christian of Woodhaven experience God’s love and God’s provision through the care of our nursery attendants. Though this age group does not use a curriculum, Becky and Stephanie provide a happy and safe environment for our children to grow and explore God’s world. Our nursery beeper system allows parents to attend their own classes with confidence, knowing that they may be reached if their child needs them. The nursery is located just east of the church offices, at the far end of Hancock Hall, closest to the Education Building.

Pre-School (ages 3-5) Holly & Ernie Barry

As children transition from nursery to Sunday School, this class allows time for both structured learning and free play. The Pre-school Class utilizes the "Covenant People" curriculum and explores topics such at community, baptism and key Biblical characters. The Pre-school class meets in the education building, the first classroom on the left.

Journey Into Faith (grades K-5) Ann Ouzts & Noelle Williams, Coordinators

Journey Into Faith is our education program for elementary aged children. The program utilizes the Workshop Rotation Model. In the model, children explore Biblical stories through different workshops, such as art, drama, computers, and story telling. The different workshops work together to teach and reinforce our Biblical heritage. Shepherds accompany the children on their journey. Through out the year, a wide range of teachers will lead the different workshops, but the shepherds will remain the same.

Youth (grades 6-12)

              May Youth Calendar

Young Adults Jerram Froese

There is no criterion for "young adult;" the rule is, if you think you are a young adult, if you feel like a young adult, if you would like to be a young adult, you are welcome in this class. The Young Adult class is known for their lively conversation and the rich friendships that grow here.  All are welcome to throw their thoughts into the ring as we discuss our varying topics.  The Young Adults meet in the Education Building just off the Oasis (large meeting room).  This summer they will be studying and discussing Jeremiah.

Small Group Fellowship Bonnie Moseley

The Small Group Fellowship class emphasizes both Bible study and Christian fellowship. The two go hand in hand as they together explore scripture and support one another in their Christian journey. This class has just begun a new study, "Luke: New Hope, New Joy;" they meet in the Parlor on the west end of Hancock Hall.

Spirit Seekers Charles Schmidt

Each week the Spirit Seekers begin their time with a discussion of the week’s current event and the Christian response. This discussion is followed by a topical study. Spirit Seekers meet in their classroom at the north end of the Education building.

Bible Study Dave Hindman

The Bible is the primary curriculum for the Bible Study class. Each week, they cover approximately 3 chapters as they work their way through the Bible. A wide variety of resources are utilized as they seek to deepen their understanding of God’s Word and its implication in our daily lives. They meet in the Hand bell room, in the NE corner of the sanctuary building.  Bill Porter will be leading a their study of Hosea.  Afterward, Jen Stephens and Hortense Haines will team lead the study of the books of Joel and Amos.

Bible 101 Dena Owens

Call Dena for more information.

 Inquirers Shannon Johnson Kershner

Throughout the year, we offer a 4-week Inquirer’s class for folks who are new to the Presbyterian tradition, or to Woodhaven. We cover everything from Reformed theology to why we do what we do in worship. Although we cannot go too much in depth in only four weeks, it is a good stepping-stone and introduction to this particular family of faith. We will meet in the Bride's Room.  If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Shannon Kershner, skershner@woodhavenpres.org

All Sunday School Classes are under the direction of our Sunday School Superintendent, Courtney Komlosi.

Other opportunities in education:

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Each summer we offer a special educational opportunity for our children. In Vacation Bible School, we spend one week exploring Bible stories in a fun and exciting way. Every year is different! We offer classes for children ages 3-5th grade, with leadership opportunities for youth in grades 6-12. VBS 2008 will be June.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is a time of preparation as youth prepare to take on the responsibility of adult membership in the church and confirm their faith as their own. This is an intense study offered to youth in grades 8 and up covering topics such as Bible knowledge, theology, church history and government and Christian discipleship. During this ten-week course, confirmands will take an in-depth look at their own faith journey and the roles that they, God and the faith community play in that journey. Adult mentors join confirmands on their journey and covenant to be faith partners. For more information on confirmation, please contact Julie Riley at jriley@woodhavenpres.org.
