Christian Education

Sunday School   Gary Rork, Superintendent

Woodhaven has Sunday School for all ages each Sunday from 9:00am-10:00am throughout the year, including summer.

Infants and Toddlers

Nursery  (ages birth-2 years) Becky Manale & Stefanie Garcia, teachers Available during the Sunday School and Worship hours.

The youngest Christians of Woodhaven experience God’s love through the care of our nursery attendants. Though this age group does not use a curriculum, Ms. Becky and Ms. Stefanie provide a happy and safe environment for our children to grow and explore God’s world. Our nursery beeper system allows parents to attend their own classes and Worship with confidence, knowing that they can be reached if their child needs them.

The nursery is located just east of the church offices, at the far end of Hancock Hall, closest to the C.E. Building.

Summer Sunday School for Pre K-5th Grades

This summer the Pre K (3-4 years) and Elementary (K-5th) classes will be combined. They will be using the “We Believe: Awesome Adventures” curriculum where they will experience stories of God’s people on mountains and the seas. The class will be taught by various capable adult volunteers who are a part of Woodhaven’s church family.

They will meet in the C.E. Building.

Youth (6th-12th grades)

This summer, during the Sunday School hour, the Youth are using the Nooma video series with Rob Bell and are led by Jim Kinder. They meet in the Trinity Theater in the C.E. Building.

Confirmation  (offered to Youth in 8th-12th grades)

Confirmation is a time of preparation as Youth prepare to take on the responsibility of adult membership in the church and confirm their faith as their own. This intense study covers topics such as Bible knowledge, theology, church history and government, and Christian discipleship. During this 8 week course, Confirmands will take an in-depth look at their own faith journey and the roles that they, God, and the faith community play in that journey. Adult mentors join Confirmands on their journey and covenant to be faith partners.

For more information about Confirmation, please contact Director of Christian Education, Hallie Spence at hspence@woodhavenpres.org

Sunday Evening Fellowship

Sunday evenings are different every week, especially during the summer. Sometimes we meet for Bible study, sometimes for Worship, sometimes for service, and sometimes we do nothing but play games and enjoy Christ in our midst. Each meeting, regardless of the topic is always filled with friendship, laughter, and sharing, as together we learn what it means to be a part of the Body of Christ.

We will be attending various camps this summer, so we will not always meet for our regular Sunday night fellowship time.  See the monthly newsletter or contact Jim Kinder at 214-815-8115 or jimkinder@verizon.net for a schedule.

Adult Sunday School Offerings

Woodhaven is currently offering four Sunday School classes for adults, each with its own unique focus and personality. If you do not currently have a Sunday School “home”, we invite you to explore the different opportunities to nurture your faith and spiritual journey.

For information on what each class is currently studying, see the monthly newsletter.

Small Group Sunday School Class Led by Bonnie Moseley  Meets in the Parlor (west end of Hancock Hall)

The Small Group Sunday School Class seeks to balance good Christian fellowship and good Christian education by nurturing one another together. They engage in studies of both scripture and discipleship. This class is known for its relationships and for the spirit of prayer in their midst.

Spirit Seekers Led by Charles Schmidt

Meets in the Spirit Seekers Room (north end of the C.E. Building)

This group is known for its broad theological diversity and open dialogue. Each Sunday, the class looks at current issues in the religious world, actions of the General Assembly, and does an ongoing study on topical issues.

Bible Study Coordinated by John Blount

Meets in Handbell Room (northeast corner of sanctuary building)

The Adult Bible Study Class is best known for their careful and continuous study of the Bible. Utilizing a multitude of Biblical tools and the collective wisdom gathered around the table, this class seeks to understand scripture and its claim on us as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Short Attention Span Class    Led by Rob Allen  -  Meets in Hancock Hall

While this class was originally established for young adults, it has always been open to people of all ages. This group is known for its fierce intellectual struggle with all kinds of issues of church and faith. They usually use a book study or video study format.

 Inquirers

Throughout the year, we offer a 4 week Inquirer’s Class for folks who are new to the Presbyterian tradition or to Woodhaven. We cover everything from Reformed theology to why we do what we do in Worship. Although we cannot go too much in depth in only 4 weeks, it is a good stepping stone and introduction to this particular family of faith.

For more information about the Inquirer’s Class, please contact Pastor, Rev. Diane Baldwin at dbaldwin@woodhavenpres.org

All Sunday School Classes are under the direction of our Sunday School Superintendent, Gary Rork.

Other opportunities in education:

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

We offer classes for children ages 3-5th grade, with leadership opportunities for youth in grades 6-12. VBS will be June 13-17, 2011.
